The basic goal of this project is to continue the IAA participation in the NOMAD experiment and to contribute to the scientific exploitation of both instruments NOMAD and ACS.
We propose to advance in two directions: (1) the study of trace gases, including detection, retrieval of precise abundances and their spatial and temporal distribution, and (2) the composition and thermal structure of the upper atmosphere. Both are ambitious goals and both are poorly characterized so far. The study of minor species like methane in the atmosphere of Mars is behind the initial concept of Exomars TGO. And the upper atmosphere still is the less studied region in Mars, in spite of being of paramount importance for escape processes and the long-term evolution of the planet. These objectives are possible with Exomars TGO because of its new observational strategy, compared to previous Mars missions. This is the sounding of the atmosphere in a limb geometry and in solar occultation. As it is well known in Earth studies, those two combined factors increase the number of absorbers and their optical path and will permit systematic sounding of minor species and of the highest atmospheric altitudes.
